Government releases the UK Low Carbon Transition Plan

The Government has published a comprehensive plan outlining how we will move towards a low carbon economy, transforming the country into a cleaner, greener and more prosperous place to live. This White Paper for climate and energy maps out how we will meet a 34% cut in carbon emissions by 2020.

The document encompasses the power sector; homes and communities; workplaces and jobs; transport; and, for the first time, farming and land management, with key actions for each identified.

By 2020, it envisions that:
• More than 1.2 million people will be in green jobs
• 7 million homes will have benefited from whole house makeovers, and more than 1.5 million households will be supported to produce their own clean energy
• 40% of electricity will be from low carbon sources, from renewables, nuclear and clean coal
• We will be importing half the amount of gas that we otherwise would
• The average new car will emit 40% less carbon than now.

Two other strategies have been published alongside: the UK Low Carbon Industrial Strategy and the Renewable Energy Strategy. These three documents ensure that the UK is leading the way in planning a systematic response to climate change in the run up to the global climate talks in Copenhagen in December
