Wind turbines and ASHP to be permitted development

Effective as of 1 December 2011.  Wind turbines and air source heat pumps are now to be permitted in terms of planning under amendments to the Permitted Development rules (England only).  Up until recently it was only solar PV, solar thermal, biomass boilers and ground source heat pumps that were permitted.

Below is a summary of key points

  • Permitted unless there is already a wind turbine or an air source heat pump on the property
  • Permitted unless within conservation areas, national parks, heritage sites etc
  • ASHPs - permitted unless 1m or less to neighbour's property
  • Wind turbines are permitted unless the blade diameter exceeds 3.8m
  • Building mounted turbines are only permitted if on a detached building, and do not exceed 15m height from ground level to blade tip
  • Stand alone turbines are permitted if they do not exceed 11.1m in height to blade tip.

This is a summary, there are many other conditions.
